Remote inspection of identification documents for Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification ended on July 31, 2023. Employers have until August 30, 2023, to review in person all identification documents that were inspected remotely under relaxed COVID guidelines (beginning March 20, 2020). In addition, documents that have expired, for example drivers’ licenses, must be updated and the change initialed by the company representative. “Documents physically examined” and the date this is done must be added to the Form I-9. A new version of the Form I-9 was published on August 1, 2023. This form should be used for all employees hired on or after that date, although the previous form may be used until November 1, 2023. The new form has been reduced to one page, may be completed electronically, and allows employers who use E-Verify to verify identification documents remotely. https://www.uscis.gov/i-9
